Product Description If you think that watching all the nature programs on television qualifies you as an expert on the subject, think again! Do you really know what makes animals tick? Here are the answers, portrayed in stunning, awe-inspiring action sequences and explained in fascinating, in-depth prose. Thematically arranged by behavior trait, Animal Life explores and explains every aspect of animal behavior, including courtship rituals and sex lives, family relationships and defense mechanisms, hunting techniques and feeding habits. Side panels explore some of the field research on animal behavior and explain important conservation issues. The introductory chapters on the Animal Kingdom and on animal anatomy help explain how different animals have evolved and adapted to their environments, adaptations that may be relevant to particular behaviors. Destined to be the ultimate authority on animal behavior, this book also looks at key behavioral concepts such as how animals learn to behave and the role of instinct in the learning process. AUTHOR BIO: Charlotte Uhlenbroek, Ph.D. spent four years in the forests of Gombe, Tanzania, completing her doctorate in chimpanzee communication under the auspices of world-famous Jane Goodall. Uhlenbroek is an accomplished broadcaster, appearing in many prestigious documentaries produced by the BBC Wildlife Unit, including Talking with Animals (2002) on communications of creatures as diverse as cuttlefish and wolves, Jungle on the world's rain forests, and the 20-part series Safari School (2007). She has published two books to accompany these series, Talking with Animals and Jungle, both of which are now out of print.

Best! January 7, 2009 This is THE animal book for anyone interested, young or old, as well as being beautifully compiled and photographed.
Most complete animal book around December 18, 2008 A beautiful book, as all DK references tend to be, this covers every aspect of animal life from taxonomy, and anatomy, to behavior. Because the magnitude of what the book chooses to cover is so broad, it has to be brief and skim some topics, but it is an incredible collection of animal facts assembled all in one place that is pertinent to either the lay person, even school age children, to zoologists, as I am. Even though I already know about much of the subjects, it is still a pleasure to look at the stunning pictures and detailed graphics. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in animals.
A museum in a book November 25, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This color-drenched, fact-packed, museum-in-a-book falls open to a double-page spread of a rainbow-hued lizard with a catapulting tongue as long as its body caught in the act of snaring dinner. Or maybe a double-page spread of a maniacal hyena frightening off a pack of dogs. Not an image to share with your 5-year-old before bedtime. Or yourself, for that matter.
But it's not all big spreads of amazing pictures. The photos are great, but most are a lot smaller in order to fit as many in as possible. Like the Natural History Museum itself, the book aims to teach and inspire its readers and browsers to go out and learn more.
It begins with an overview of animal classification, followed by an exploration of the various anatomies animals have evolved to accomplish the basic tasks of circulation, support, digestion, reproduction, etc.
But the book's heart is behavior. Here we find the action shots and the awe-inducing factoids concerning eight major areas of life: Living Space, Hunting and Feeding, Defense, Sex and Reproduction, Birth and Development, Society, Communication, and Intelligence.
There's a marvelous spread of bats night fishing and smaller, more educational shots of their big ears and sharp teeth. We see cubs play fighting adorably and their parents putting those lessons to work in the real world. While the shots of fierce birds and cute mammals always draw the eye, some of the most fascinating creatures are the insects and amphibians we seldom see or pay attention to.
The Texas horned lizard, for instance, repels attackers with a squirt of its own foul-tasting blood and up to 100 male garter snakes will mob a female in a big squirming ball, from which she will choose just one. There are water spiders that breathe air but build a silken diving bell that allows them to live underwater their whole lives.
I could go on and on, of course; readers will pore over the text and pictures both. While the information is necessarily broad and the facts tantalizing, many readers may be inspired to learn more about the animals within. A gorgeous and fascinating overview of the animal kingdom for all ages.
