Product Description
Orchids are the largest family of plants in the world. With 30,000 known species, you could acquire a different orchid every day for eighty years and still not grow them all. Back in the realm of reality, readers of this beautiful book can quickly and easily find the orchids that are right for them -- which ones will thrive on a windowsill, which prefer artificial lights, and which need a greenhouse; which are for beginners, which for experts. And you can pinpoint the species within a particular genus that are the best ones to start with. Once you select your orchid, William Cullina's authoritative guide explains what to do to keep it alive and healthy.
Featuring more than two hundred color photographs, Understanding Orchids covers everything you need to know to grow orchids successfully, whatever your level of interest or experience. With improved tissue-culture techniques making orchids more affordable, and the Internet making them readily available to consumers, growing orchids is more popular than ever: membership in the American Orchid Society has more than doubled in the last fifteen years. This is the book orchid fans have been waiting for.

5 out of 5 stars IT'S A LIFESAVER!   July 8, 2010
Lynne Farr
"Understanding Orchids" is a lifesaver, for me and the orchids which come to live at our house in the rainforest on the Big Island of Hawaii. Most are going to live outdoors in their natural habitat in the hapu'u fern trees on our land, but, without this book I wouldn't know which ones are "cool" to "intermediate" growers, prepared for our micro-climate; I wouldn't know who likes sun and who only wants deep shade; I wouldn't know who wants to be planted in the ground, not on a tree; or what's the lowest temperature a given orchid can tolerate, or which ones should never be allowed to dry out, or how much and when to feed them. I'd be an orchid murderess, for sure, without this book. With it, I'm a good friend and they thrive. Have to clutch my wallet, though, 'cause I want too many of the gorgeous plants pictured in "Understanding Orchids." Lynne Farr, author of OFF THE GRID WITHOUT A PADDLE Off The Grid Without A Paddle

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners.   May 2, 2010

I enjoy this book very much because it provides more information on the cultivation and growing of each genus than common orchid books.
Huge encyclopedias are usually full of theory, listing the properties of the plants, but with little specific detail on their cultivation.
Cullina points out the difficulty of growing specific genera unless certain growing conditions are provided and this helps to avoid a wrong choice. There is little detail on the species of the large genera, but this is a simple guide so i would not expect more.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Orchids   January 30, 2010

An excellent overview of the hobby of growing and collecting orchids.
I highly recommend this book to the beginner or to someone who is an established grower.

5 out of 5 stars Orchid expertise welcome   January 29, 2010
Judith H. Ricker (Leverett, MA USA)
My husband is the orchid grower. He has three orchid reference books, and this is easily the best one. We also gave this book as a gift to his sister, who shared contents with her son-in-law, and so it goes ...

5 out of 5 stars Orchid lover's bible   May 14, 2009
Unforgettable Fire (Heartland)
My husband has become an orchid enthusiast (big time) in the last year and he raves about this book. He now has 15 plants of multiple varieties and this book has educated him on how to exactly nurture each of his delicate "babies".
