Product Description
The Backyard Homestead Put your backyard to work! Enjoy fresher, organic, better-tasting food all the time. The solution is as close as your own backyard. Grow the vegetables and fruits your family loves; keep bees; raise chickens, goats, or even a cow. The Backyard Homestead shows you how it's done. And when the harvest is in, you'll learn how to cook, preserve, cure, brew, or pickle the fruits of your labor. From a quarter of an acre, you can harvest 1,400 eggs, 50 pounds of wheat, 60 pounds of fruit, 2,000 pounds of vegetables, 280 pounds of pork, 75 pounds of nuts. Reviews "Bottom line is, even if you're not ready for complete self-sufficiency, in today's economic climate, it just makes sense to try to produce some of your own food. And this book is a great way to get your feet wet." - Epicurious.com "The tone is sweet and accessible, and the

5 out of 5 stars Very impressed!   August 29, 2010

Very quick shipping and the book is in excellent shape. Would buy from this seller again.

5 out of 5 stars This is a good beginners guide to backyard homesteading.   August 27, 2010

I enjoyed reading this book. It is informative for beginners, and helps someone who has never started their own garden or raised animals to make informed decisions about what to keep in their backyard.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to step into self-reliance, but doesn't quite know how.

5 out of 5 stars User Friendly Resouce!   August 14, 2010
Burgundy Damsel (Albany, New York)
Extremely well organized and user-friendly, this book covers everything you need to know about getting your feet wet with self-sufficiency no matter where you live or what stage of the process you're in. Very well done sketches and illustrations walk you through everything from making a trellis for beans to grow up to building a chicken coop. There are many practical and helpful hints and suggestions as you go along, designed to keep new experimenters from getting in over their heads and discouraged. Highly recommended reading!

5 out of 5 stars This book is amazing!   August 8, 2010
R. Hooyman (Little Chute, WI)
I can't begin to describe how awesome this book is. It literally covers everything. Mind you it doesn't go indepth on a lot of the subjects, it just covers the "need to know to get started." But everything is in here: what to rotate in regarding crops, when to plant, how to raise livestock, cheesemaking, beer making, wine making, canning, making maple syrup, garden layouts, and herb suggestions etc. It is amazing! For those of you who have always dreamed of having a farmette...well you will love this book. Makes backyard homesteading seem feasible! My fiance is already rolling his eyes at me LOL! P.S. The gardening section does go pretty indepth where the rest of the subjects are the beginners sort.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tool!   August 4, 2010

I found this book to be informative and inspiring. We have already implemented many of the ideas shared in the book. It is very easy to use, well organized and very nicely illustrated. Although I needed find additional details on some concerns elsewhere, I think you would be hardpressed to find more comprehensive coverage of this topic all in one place. Great for beginners, intermediates, and "wanna-be's". I highly recommend it!
